Unit Goal

  • Analyze the causes of New Imperialism, how Western nations exploited new colonial territories in Africa and Asia, and how people resisted European expansionism.

Main Ideas

  • Analyze motives, methods, practices, policies of different colonizers on indigenous societies
  • Evaluate the effects and impact on both sides in regards to economics, politics, culture, religion, and resources
  • How people and nations responded, reacted or resisted
  • Compare and contrast political boundaries in 1875 and 1914
  • Relationships among Industrial Revolution, nationalism, competition for global markets, imperialism and natural resources
  • Analyze racism as a cause and/or consequence of imperialism
